The Laker game yesterday all started with JC calling–JC never calls anymore because he is a big time golf executive and big time golf execs are pricks. Anyway, JC called called late Tuesday night with four magical words, “I have Laker tickets” he said. I think partially he wanted to get together and take in a game but other-partially he wanted to show off his new arm candy (because golf execs always get the girls). Marsh couldn’t go due to her first Big Sisters of SB County meeting which meant that BG had only one other friend in Santa Barbara that he could call on: The Mexicutioner. Not only do we share the same initials but we have played in the same fantasy sports leagues for the past seven years. Tickets to see Kobe vs. Kevin Durant? Yes, please.

Since my job is not exactly sweet and I am not an executive I had to fake a cold in order get out of work by 3:30. The two BGs were on the road and battling our way past LAX (instead of taking the 101 to the 110 I opted for the 405 to the 10 which I will never do again) with visions of a Jeff Green triple double dancing in our heads (well, my head at least). The Mexicutioner and I arrived prior to JC and Starburst so we scouted out the LA Live scene across from Staples–way, way nicer than the parking lot that used to be there. The eateries on hand clearly needed some extra bartenders though–the ratio of bartenders to patrons was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1:100 so we decided to wait for some Chicken Nugs during the game. Eventually JC and Skittles showed up and we wandered through Staples looking for our mysterious seats which we couldn’t find because they were in the VIP section, a section I am generally not familiar with. I would like to take this moment to briefly mention the girls in and around the Los Angeles area: wow. Just wow. And this is from a guy who lives in Santa Barbara and is used to seeing lovely coeds running about. “These girls are more dressed up the girls at my prom,” the golf exec said at one point.

After the BGs got our Nugs we proceeded to sit and watch K Durant show why is the most exciting young player in the league. KD is a flat out beast. As soon as the Thunder would pull down a rebound (sadly Russel Westbrook ripped more boards than Jeff Green) KD would take off down the floor, get the ball in transition and explode to the rim. He is so long and lanky that it’s almost surreal watching him motor down the floor–he also seems to jump OUT more than he jumps UP if that makes sense. He dunked on the first play of the game (at least I think it was the first play) from almost outside the key near baseline. Just a beast. Of course Kobe and Pau eventually overpowered the Thunder had to offer, thanks to a huge second quarter and a TON of easy baskets. Jeff Green was the only Oklahoma City Thunderer who seemed to show any interest in playing defense. Still though, show me a more dynamic group of young players than Durant, Green and Westbrook–not enough D and too loosey-goosey with the rock but those guys can score almost at will.

So not a bad night for the two BGs: Laker duckets, got to meet SweetTart, and minimal traffic on the way back up to SB. Oh and did I mention the teddy bears they were giving away at the door? I gave mine to the dog once I got back home and he proceeded to immediately rip the nose off of it and then hump it like he was Ron Jeremy but whatever.
