One of the best parks in baseball -- too bad the team in it sucks.
Whatever, man. You know what? I’m a little tired of the whole steroids in baseball thing.
First of all, it was absurd that the U.S. Congress got involved. I mean, what are there, like 500 Major League Baseball players in the entire world? And here Congress was making a big deal about them taking steroids — despite the fact that we had a bogus war in Iraq, a president who condoned torture and a housing market that was bloating far faster than Barry Bonds’s head.
I wanted to say, “Hey, Congress — there’s 300 million of us here. How’s about working on getting us some healthcare?” But i didn’t say that because, I don’t know — I usually just have these conversations in my head.
But my point to this whole thing is this: The Giants should have never gotten rid of Barry Bonds.
I mean, really — what a bunch of chicken shits. They had to know Bonds was juiced before. But once the heat came down, they were all like, “No thanks, Barry — homey don’t play that.”
But let’s face it — we’ll never know who all took steroids in baseball. And besides — who cares? It wasn’t against the rules. So while Congress was grilling Mark McGwire — a guy whose actions affect basically nobody — unregulated corporate scumbags were driving us to the brink of Depression.
Besides, Barry Bonds was the most exciting player in my lifetime. I mean, seriously, this guy was Mighty Casey fearsome — with good reason: Had it not been for cowardly pitchers and managers walking him three times a game, he might have passed Japanese homerun king Sadaharu Oh’s mark of 868 dingers. (If he’d played in the Majors, I’d guess Oh might have hit around half as many.) Even if you didn’t give a crap about the Giants, you’d stop whatever you were doing to see Bonds at the plate.
And ever since Bonds left the Giants, they’ve been worthless.
Not just worthless — but dreadful.
Here you have a team once known for the longball — at least from Bonds — now painfully weak at the plate. Last year’s team leader for homeruns, Benjie Molina, had just 16.
I’m pretty sure Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano could hit 16 out of the park if he played every day.
And it doesn’t look like the Giants are going to be any better this year. Their big catch in the off season is Randy Johnson, who turns 63 in September.
It’s too bad. Because the Giants have one of the best ball parks — Pac Bell/Candlestick2.0/AT&T/Whatever They Call It — in the league. And let’s not forget John Miller — one of the best — calling games in the booth.
So let’s bring Barry back. He might be older, but, hey — he’s still a kid compared to Randy Johnson.
